Our History – Waikare Golf Club
The Waikare Golf Club, one of the oldest golf clubs in the Waikato, was founded in 1928. The first rounds of golf were played on a modest 6-hole course at the Viticultural Research Station on Scott Road. Just two years later, in 1930, the club moved to its current location in Te Kauwhata, where a 9-hole layout was created – complete with sheep grazing on the fairways.
In its early years, Waikare Golf Club briefly shared the course with Huntly Golf Club as tenants. By the 1940s, the layout began to grow, increasing from 11 to 13 holes with shared greens. A major milestone came in the 1950s, when land to the east was acquired, allowing the development of a full 18-hole golf course. In 1958, Waikare proudly opened its first official 18-hole layout, which remains the foundation of the course enjoyed today.
Officially named Waikare Golf Club (Te Kauwhata) Inc., the club reflects both its close ties to the growing township of Te Kauwhata and its connection to nearby Lake Waikare – the largest lake in the lower Waikato catchment. The club emblem, a swan, symbolises the rich birdlife and natural beauty of the region.
The clubhouse, originally built in the late 1960s, has been carefully upgraded with additions and modernisations in the 1990s, early 2000s, and beyond, ensuring it continues to serve as a welcoming hub for members and visitors alike.
Today, Waikare Golf Club is home to a vibrant membership, drawing golfers from the local Te Kauwhata community, across North Waikato, and a growing contingent from Auckland. With its proud history, scenic setting, and friendly atmosphere, Waikare remains a favourite destination for golfers seeking an authentic and enjoyable Waikato golf experience.
Nestled in the heart of Te Kauwhata, Waikare Golf Club offers a golfing experience that seamlessly blends challenging play with the natural beauty of the Waikato countryside. Conveniently located adjacent to Te Kauwhata College and just 2 kilometers from State Highway 1, our 18-hole course is the northernmost in the Waikato region, making it a perfect halfway stop between Auckland and Hamilton.
The course offers a par 70 from the blue tees and a par 72 from the yellow tees, spread over 75 acres of flat to gently rolling terrain. With tree-lined fairways, well-manicured greens, bunkers, and water hazards, it presents a fair test for golfers of all levels. You'll also enjoy unique local art installations, with stunning sculptures strategically placed throughout the course, adding to the overall experience.
More than just a place to play golf, Waikare Golf Club is a warm and welcoming community where golfers come together for local tournaments, social events, and a shared love for the sport. After your round, relax in our clubhouse with refreshments and take in the scenic views. Carts are available for hire if needed, though it’s an easy walking course for most.
